Each Way Horse Betting

a pound each way

You need to have a rough idea about the basic structure of  horse betting with each way places and payouts.

Non handicap races

2-4 runners pays the winner only, (1st).

5-7 runners pays 1/4 the odds for the first 2 places, (1st, 2nd).

8+ runners pays 1/5 the odds for the first 3 places, (1st, 2nd, 3rd).

Handicap Races

2-4 runners pays the winner only, (1st).

5-7 runners pays 1/4 the odds for the first 2 places, (1st, 2nd).

8-11 runners pays 1/5 the odds for the first 3 places, (1st, 2nd, 3rd).

12-15 runners pays 1/4 the odds for the first 3 places, (1st, 2nd, 3rd).

16+ runners pays 1/4 the odds for the first 4 places, (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th).

Once you understand the betting structure you are good to go and invest your money into the horse betting field. Each way investments are far safer than backing horses to win. Each way bets are split into two separate bets, 1 x bet for the horse to win and 1 x bet for the horse to place 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

Race horses with odds of at least 4/1 can be a good investment for E/W horse betting, so as you can see below, any odds less than 4/1 will not recover the full stake amount should the horse only place. But should the horse win @4/1, your investment would have made you a clear £5.00 profit on your £2.00p stake.

In these examples, stakes are £1.00 E/W (total £2.00p) and these places pay 1/4 odds, not 1/5.

           2/1                            £4.50p                    £1.50p
           5/2                            £5.13p                    £1.63p
           3/1                            £5.75p                    £1.75p
          10/3                           £6.17p                    £1.83p
           4/1                            £7.00p                    £2.00p
           9/2                            £7.63p                    £2.13p
           5/1                            £8.25p                    £2.25p
          11/2                           £8.88p                    £2.38p
           6/1                            £9.50p                    £2.50p
         13/2                            £9.80p                    £2.00p
           7/1                            £10.75p                  £2.75p
         15/2                            £11.38p                  £2.88p
          8/1                             £12.00p                  £3.00p

Obviously outsiders, or horses with prices of 20/1 or more, do actually win or place, from time to time, but investing in horses with shorter odds is a far safer way to bet, however, if a long string of loses should ever occur, never increase your betting stake to try and gain your losses.

Doing this will eat away at your bankroll, super fast, so you should go back to the previous bankroll level of betting and start again.
